Reviewed by Stephen H. Wildstrom, Businessweek (December 15, 2003) "Shure sent over their entry level e2 (nice sound, $99), the e3 ($179), and e5 ($499, possibly the most neutral-sounding headphones I've ever listened to, as well they should be for the price)
My favorite is the e3, which comes close to matching the e5's sound without the slightly larger dual-driver enclosure (yes, the e5 actually has separate itty bitty bass and treble drivers crammed in there somehow). For my ears, the e3's are more comfortable, and I've worn them while mowing the lawn, on international flights, at my desk, in the NY subway system." "I tried two sets [of earphones] from Shure, for instance, that fit my ears better [than the Apple iPod earbuds] and provide excellent sound quality. The e2 costs $99, but the e5, which renders exceptional sound with different drivers for high and low frequencies, costs $499." "The good news is that the musical detailing and especially the bass response is spectacular with these little critters, unmatched by conventional small earphones." "Whether on stage or in the studios, Shure has a long history with musicians around the world.
Recently, they have introduced an E Series line [of earphones] for consumers, taken from their professional products.
The low-mass, high-energy drivers not only contribute to the compact design, but also deliver impressive sound quality." "Many music-player headsets present the same ear-bud problem
[T]he headset from Shure has a small spongy bud that fits snugly in my odd-sized ear, and it stays in place even if I am moving around." "These magnificently miniature fountains of high-fidelity sound benefit from Shure's many years of research and experience
" "The makers of Shure have basically upped the ante within the market of headphones and sound gear...after I customized them to my ear canal, I heard nothing else at all. Not even the screaming neighbor's kids." "The E2 'phones boast terrific full-range drivers (those back-up singers finally rise up out of the mix) and Fit Kits for custom, snug, noise-isolating comfort, while the E5 'phones use separate high- and low-frequency drivers for a rich aural fix. What I thought were wind chimes at the end of a favorite Smiths track turned out to be an antique music box!" ""The E2c and E5c fit comfortably inside your ear and create an isolated listening space that blocks out background noise. You'll hear parts of the recording you never knew were there."

"The Shure E2c mini-stereo earphones are an excellent, compact alternative to traditional large bulky studio-type headphones, providing audio performance rivaling its larger cousins." "The Shure E2C produces clear, smooth sound. The treble is clear and never became screechy in our tests. The midrange is balanced and well represented, and the bass is deep and not boomy at all." Chicago Innovation Awards Sponsored by consulting firm Kuczmarski & Associates and the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper, a Chicago Innovation Award was given to Shure for the company's E2c earphone. "When playing Call of Duty and Unreal Tournament 2004, I felt totally immersed; the [E2c] headphones gave me a feeling of surround sound." "...they're incredible... and nothing comes close to these E2c's. It's just unbelievable. You can hear so much more stuff when you're listening to music that you don't hear even with really high-end headphones... I put the Shure [E2c earphones] in, and it's just like, 'Wow!" "Awesome. Amazing. …A miniature, high-energy audio driver delivers sound reproduction that is simply stunning."

Mike Wendland and Heather Newman, Detroit Free Press (January 2003) "
One of my co-workers turned me on to the Shure e2 cans. He had them paired up with his new iPOD and was loving the results. I listened to everything from McCoy Tyner to My Bloody Valentine to Atmosphere to Mozart and the e2s just got better and better. The e2s are smartly designed, sound excellent, and offer good value." e2 CNET Review "The sounds of silence-and music-just got easier to take on the road and in the air." "The e2's isolation is absolutely superb for when you want to get lost in the music." "I highly recommend the Shure e2 Earphones. In the gym, they proved invaluable on the treadmill due to the loud gym environment and the undesirable music pumped in from the loudspeakers overhead
The Shure e2 Earphones simply blew me away." "The e2 sounds great with any music source; recommended highly."

Stereophile 2004 Accessory of the Year
iPodLounge "Recommended" Seal "You would never think something so small could create a sound so big, but they do. The listening experience delivered by the SHURE e3 Sound Isolating Earphones is the equivalent of squeezing a high-end set of speakers into the area of your aural canal." "The structure of the e3 earphones is excellent and well-thought out. The color-scheme and the accessory kit are just as impressive. Shure's idea to include different sizes of sleeves does make a difference to overall productivity of the product… If you are in the market for high-quality earphones, we suggest you place the e3 earphones at the top of your list." "They're the best commericially available earbuds we've tried...For us, the better choice is the Shure e3." "In our tests, the e3 successfully blocked all outside noise and delivered excellent highs and lows, bringing previously unheard sounds and vocals to life. Though expensive, these buds are worth every dime if you're serious about your music." "The e3 sounded great across the audio range…The noise isolation they provided was excellent -- To my ears…the Shure e3 sounded best." "I've often wondered why anyone would pay over $150 for a pair of high end headphones… [t]hen I tried the new Shure e3 earphones… The sound is awesome, and I was able to hear instruments that I had never heard before from my Windows Media Player… I don't know how else to describe them other than by saying it's like being at a live concert, minus the sound of the rest of the audience." "If you're looking for a perfect way to isolate your ears for some serious audio mixing, or need a color-coordinated companion for your iPod, these earpieces will make any audio source sound like a middle-of-your-head Carnegie Hall." ... "[The e3s] give you huge sound from a remarkably small package." "I consider the Shure e3 product as the ultimate accessory for my prized Apple iPod. As good as the supplied rare earth magnet earphones are that come with the iPod, there is simply no comparison with these e3 phones. It's a serious WOW experience." "Once you've heard an iPod with the Shure e3 Sound Isolating Earphones, you'll be singing a different iTune." "...a product that works exactly as advertised, completely satisfying you with its near-perfection... They give you startlingly fat bass notes interspersed with wide open midrange without even a hit of hollowness, and smooth, crystal-clear highs... These earpieces will make any audio source sound like a middle-of-your-head Carnegie Hall." Jeff Kitts calls the e3 "the perfect complement to the iPod (or any other MP3 player, portable CD player, etc.)," praises sound quality and fit, and concludes that "whether you're on a plane or a train or just hoofing it across town, the e3 earphones will be music to your ears." "I've been wearing Shure's e3's for the past four hours. The roar of the 747's four Pratt & Whitney engines are nothing but a low whisper, and the dialogue, music and sound effects of Kill Bill Volume 1 are perfectly clear and crisp across all frequency ranges. Because the seal is so tight, you can set the volume to a half or even a third of what it would be with regular headphones, which extends your MP3 player's battery life."

"Shure's E4 earbuds are simply the best in-ear headphones we've ever heard."

"Listening to music I know well, I can definitely detect powerful subtleties, as on the Miles Davis album, In A Silent Way, I can hear Davis muttering instructions in the background. Joni Mitchell's vocals feel unquestionably powerful, while Eddie Van Halen's guitars shake the inside of my skull the same way they did when I was 14."Arik Hesseldahl Forbes.com
Innovations 2005 Design and Engineering Showcase Awards At this year's CES, Shure's E4c earphones were named a 2005 Design and Engineering Showcase honoree in the Accessories category.
The Absolute Sound Editor's Choice Awards "If you want to know what music really sounds like, these Shure E5c babies are the devices for you, even though they do cost a cool $499…. The E5c drums sounded like completely undistorted, tight, roaring thunder… Sound from either model [E5c and E3c] is amazing, it's just that the E5c elevates this sound quality to an entirely different class of amazing." "Give your ears a treat and consider Shure's E5c earphones... These earphones are to high fidelity what Duke Ellington is to jazz." "The soundstage of the E5c is much more dynamic than the ER-4. The ER-4 is much more relaxed... I feel like I'm in the 10th to the 15th row at a concert when listening to the ER-4. Where with the E5c, I feel like I'm sitting in the first row.. or perhaps even in the studio while the musicians are recording." "The professional-quality headphones block all ambient noise and provide beautifully clear sound that conveys all the subtleties of your music.
Finally, you can listen to crystal-clear music whenever you want--even on a noisy jet aircraft." TechTV.com "To put it simply, these headphones blew me away
I really didn't imagine that I would ever be able to drive this much sound out of these earphones. I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to find another pair of canalphones that can literally make the back of my neck rumble with its low-end bass, yet still deliver the clarity and accurate resolution over the midrange and top-end." "The soundstage of the e5 is much more dynamic than the ER-4. The ER-4 is much more relaxed... I feel like I'm in the 10th to the 15th row at a concert when listening to the ER-4. Where with the e5, I feel like I'm sitting in the first row.. or perhaps even in the studio while the musicians are recording." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
